Memory Care for Seniors

Among the range of private residences for seniors (RPA), some facilities specialize in care for seniors with cognitive and memory disorders. If one of your parents or another elderly loved one is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, or any other form of neurodegenerative illness, a living environment adapted for individuals with cognitive impairments is likely the ideal setting for their health and well-being. In such a residence, they can receive appropriate care from the medical team and on-site staff, all within a safe and reassuring environment.

For residents at risk of wandering, for example, the operator of a residence must take all necessary measures to prevent at-risk residents from leaving the residence or its premises. These preventive measures include, among others, the installation of a security system that can alert staff if such an incident occurs. Examples of such “devices” include:

  • A lockable door with a key
  • A coded door with a security system that does not automatically disengage during an emergency
  • A door equipped with a panic bar that is locked

If a resident requires more than 2 hours of care per day, they must then be accommodated in a long-term care and nursing home facility (CHSLD).
