Frequently Asked Questions About Home Care and About Finding a Retirement Home
Finding a retirement home
Why refer to a counsellor when looking for a residence?
Choosing a new home is a turning point that requires careful serious consideration to ensure you make the right decision. For the same reasons you would consult an expert about your insurance needs or personal finances, turning to a housing counsellor gives you a global and objective opinion about the different possibilities available to you.
Visavie counsellors are there to help individuals not only think about their short-term needs, but also think about their long-term requirements. For more information, visit Discover Visavie or contact a counsellor near you.
Who are your residence search services for?
Our services are intended for anyone needing help finding a residence for themselves or for their loved ones. Searching for a retirement home: Where to begin?
Choosing a retirement home isn’t an easy decision. This choice requires careful consideration. You need to analyze your situation, identify your needs, preferences, budget as well as the type of residence, and above all make sure you make the right decision.
How much time should I allow to find a retirement home?
Most people spend about 137 hours looking for a retirement home. They have to study the market, obtain information about the different residences that might be suitable, visit these residences and complete the administrative procedures before finalizing their choice. Visavie offers you a simple and efficient process, helping you through all necessary steps.
What does a consultation involve?
Following your initial call, during which we gather some information, a Visavie counsellor will visit you, free of charge and with no obligation on your part, to recommend retirement homes that match your criteria. Afterwards, the counsellor will visit the selected residences with you and will help you make the best decision for your needs. For more details, see our consultation service page.
What are your selection criteria for choosing a residence?
Visavie counsellors evaluate the target residences in Quebec based on the following criteria:
- Reputation of the establishment
- Quality of staff
- Quality of the location and proximity to services, shops and leisure activities
- Condition of the building, cleanliness of the premises and of the apartments
- Safety and security
- Quality of life: tranquility entertainment
- Variety and quality of the food
- Flexibility of mealtimes
- Medical and hygiene care
- Variety of services
Residences are then recommended based on the needs and criteria of each client.
How can I be certain of the quality of the recommended residences?
Our counsellors visit and evaluate private retirement homes regularly. We can therefore reassure you about the cleanliness, the safety of the establishment, the quality of the services and medical or hygiene care provided, as well as the residents’ quality of life in these establishments.
What type of housing do you recommend?
We recommend all types of housing that meet the certification of private retirement homes: Apartment or residential complexes, residences with or without services, nursing homes, and residential and long-term care centres (CHSLD). Visavie counsellors will help you choose the right option for your needs.
Your residence search services are free, but are there any hidden fees?
Our residence search services are free unless you require additional or on-demand services. In fact, the cost of services related to the search for your future home is covered by the entire network of private retirement homes in Quebec and Ontario.
Are you a house cleaning service?
No. We offer home-support services and perform light housekeeping to help seniors who wish to stay in their homes and who have difficulty performing these tasks.
Can I afford the services of a professional caregiver?
What government resources are available to me?
There are many tax deduction programs, but they are often subject to change. The Government of Quebec offers a tax credit for home-support services for seniors, for example. Visavie counsellors always have the latest information about these programs and can answer your questions as they come up.
Do I have to sign a fixed-term contract?
Our home care services are offered in the form of a service agreement, which means you don’t have to sign any short-term or long-term contracts. If your needs change and you no longer require our services, notify us a few days before your professional caregiver’s next visit so we can make arrangements to end your support services. If you require home support again in the future, it will be our pleasure to resume services.
What should I do if my parent’s condition requires more help than initially expected?
If your parent’s needs change, we will gladly adjust the care and services received accordingly.
My parent gets up in the middle of the night and needs supervision.
Our professional caregivers provide active supervision or support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
For more information, contact a counsellor.
Are pets okay?
Of course they are! After all, it’s your home!
